Edit 08/10/12 Looks like this hit EQD [link], thanks to whoever submitted it!
I was planning on having a brief break from making pony comics, then I started sketching Spitfire and she turned out looking like she was challenging somepony. A couple of rough sketches later and this one kind of wrote itself.
I really enjoyed making it cause I really took my time, and it was something a little different. I wanted to avoid showing Spitfire's cutie mark, but it would've spoiled the artwork so I ended up using the fanon one.
The plot for this comic is simple, humorous, and gives an opportunity to see both a friendship/rivalry between RD and Spitfire and a demo of what the latter can be capaple of (and may be why she's capatin).
The style is very much like the show, so it'll presumably appeal instantly to the audience. As many have said previously, RD's shading in the last panel is out of place. Random object blocking the sun or being burned from the Sonic Fireboom, I don't know.
To sum up, defintely worth viewing over and over again. Original and simple. Nothing less.
Bear with me as I go through and write this, as this is my first critique.
I really like the vision here. Spitfire's got to have some sort of awesome move we haven't seen yet in order to have become captain of the Wonderbolts, and this TOTALLY looks like something that would give her that sort of prestige. And it fits in perfectly with her name! The one minor (and I'm nitpicking at this point) thing I feel here is that there's a big jump between the first two panels. Even just having Dash say something like "Bring it on!" would make it flow a bit better for me. But that's really nothing to get caught up in; I love it overall.
This work is also very original. While the joke relies upon her move being rather similar to Rainbow's, you still managed to make the story interesting and funny. One thing actually jumped out at me: You didn't take the easy way out by just recoloring the Sonic Rainboom. I really, really love the fireball effect in the fourth panel. That's what really got you the five stars in originality for me.
The one thing I think is somewhat lacking in parts of this comic compared to some of your others is in the technique. Your comics regularly amaze me with your show accuracy. Panel 6 here is SHOCKINGLY good, as is panel 3 (though I would have liked to see some clearer burn marks in the last panel). But something feels off with Rainbow's legs in panel 4, and though we do see instances of Rainbow smiling like she is in panel 1, it's a very rare occurrence and it doesn't seem to fit this situation in my opinion.
I got a good chuckle out of this, so that's a great sign for impact. The things I mentioned for in the technique category distracted me a tad from the point of the comic, but not enough to justify a big bump from impact.
All that being said, I loved it! I can only hope that my forced nitpickiness ended up being helpful xD
