Just Do It! by DaringDashie Just Do It! by DaringDashie
I drew this for, and because of, a friend of mine here on dA. =h2g2guy consistently provides me with in depth feedback and comments on things I've drawn. Now, he has produced a great variety of Pony arts and crafts himself (even made his own pretty awesome looking Octavia plushie!) made even more impressive by the fact that he had pretty much scorned anything artistic Prior to Pony, but is occasionally frustrated by his drawing ability.

Anyway, in a recent comment conversation that we had regarding something that he'd posted, I said something along the lines of 'just find what works for you and do it'. Thinking a bit more about that I realised that I should take my own advice, I've been less than happy with some of the things I've been trying out recently which has a lot to do with my desire to find some sort of unique style that I can draw comfortably and easily. So I tried something new again, and the combination of the "Just Do It" slogan, Pinkie's felt check mark and Dash-in-a-hat that I've used to represent myself sprang to mind as a subject.

So, thank you for all the comments, and both the intentional and unintentional help you've provided me with!

This was drawn in Artstudio for iPad using a stylus using a method I'd never tried before, sketched out yesterday evening and then coloured in a few spare hours today.

To be honest though, it's quite sad that I'm posting this now. I should really be off on holiday, but the whole thing has been cancelled due to the massive fire at Nairobi airport...

I feel for you.
Hard working people do need some vacation in a while. Having their vacation being ruined is just very sad :(

It's not turned out too bad,y I suppose. We've been away in the uk instead, back home for the moment but will be off to visit family for the rest of the week.

First off, sorry to hear about your holiday :(  There certainly isn't much worse than to have planned leisure time ruined.

You hit the nail right on the head for me in terms of 'just do it'.  It's funny because that was sort of my initial philosophy going into the whole art thing, and in retrospect, it's when I forget this mantra that my art and artistic emotions suffer.

This work is something I really want to have sitting somewhere on my desk.  It serves for me as a reminder of what we all can do if we throw ourselves into it.  It makes me think of something Neil Gaiman said in his famous commencement speech:  "Someone asked me recently how to do something she thought was going to be difficult, in this case recording an audio book, and I suggested she pretend that she was someone who could do it. Not pretend to do it, but pretend she was someone who could."  Amazing what we can do if we just think we can do it, and proceed in 'just doing it'.

And based on this piece, it seems like you work the same way, too!  The level of expressiveness behind this piece is something I haven't seen from you since around the time of "The Academy Record", not to mention the brilliance of the three elements you've combined here!

On a more personal note, you can't imagine how much I appreciate you making this for and because of me.  To think that our conversation inspired you enough to take another step into another new technique and a new drawing made me so happy that I couldn't wipe this grin off my face for a really long time xD.  Just remember that you were the one who came up with the advice in the first place!

Let me just finish by thanking you again.  You've given me another way to look at art, a way that encourages enthusiastic creation instead of a microscopic investigation into precision, and I'm glad you seem to have had a slight paradigm shift as well.  As always, I'm really looking forward to your future works, and know that if you ever want to chat about art blocks or frustrations (or anything else, for that matter!), my inbox is always open :D

TAR was the last thing I did that involved tracing screenshots, so I guess that, along with my desire to do something different, contributed to he downturn I've been going through. Along with work and such. I've only spotted it on looking back after reading this comment.

Glad you're pleased, and that it's inspiring in some way :)

I really think that trying things is the only way forward, and it's what I try and practice in real life. I much prefer learning by doing rather than by study (says the person with 2degrees....)

I totally hear ya.  It's always good to try something different, but it can be really hard and frustrating when things don't come out as well as what you're used to.  It seems like you've kept going and are driving through that difficulty, though!

As for your last comment, I learn really well with study in logical pursuits (like programming and math and stuff), but clearly, learning by doing is working much, much better for artistic pursuits, at least for me!

Cheers. Been away for a week in the uk, so it's not been too bad. I've even managed to draw some ponies...
